Coming Up With a Great Nickname

Giving nicknames to best friends is a way for friends to show a sense of belonging to one another and a way to express friendly love. They are terms of endearment, and since a single name is usually given to only one person, it's usually very special.

Even though you know them better than most, it can still be tough to come up with a good nickname that sticks well for your friend. While you probably weren't going for general pet names, many times these are what become the nicknames we give our besties!

While everyone else may call them by their real name or a variation of their name, there will be times when you will be calling them by a name that only you have for them. That's special.

And it should be. After all, it probably took a lot of time and work in your friendship to make it to the best friend stage in the game, right? You've essentially earned the right to call them something different than everyone else. Own it.

So how do you go about giving them a special name to call them by? If you need a few tips and tricks, here are some that should help you along:

Consider your friend's name: Are there any ways that you can spin off of their name, form a pun or scramble the letters to make a new name? You can generate lots of ideas from thinking about their name alone.
Inside jokes: This is a big one and likely where many silly nicknames originate from, at least in my personal experiences. Surely every pair of best friends has a few inside jokes that they giggle about from time to time!
Gender: The name should suit the gender, but this is not the only way in which gender should come into play. You should also take into account whether you're a female naming a male friend, a male naming a female, a female naming a female, or a male naming a male. Some names are just not well-suited for certain gender pairs. Like, a girl can get away with calling her female bff "bitch," but a guy can't really get away with it as easily no matter what gender he directs it at, if that makes sense.
Shared hobbies: Best friends do things together, so use your hobby in an effort to think up some nicknames, whether you use terms from the hobby or just decide to engage in the hobby with your friend while brainstorming.
Sleepovers/traditions: If you're still in the age where sleepovers are the norm, have a sleepover and think about nicknames! If you have any traditions, these can also be carried out as usual while you try to think of some names. For example, my best friend and I used to play a prank on our neighbors every sleepover and hot sauce on popcorn was an absolute must-have snack for the night!

There are so many names, but you have nothing but lots of time with your friends to pick through them. Besides, if they're really your best friend, it won't really matter what names you call each other by, and you might even have a few different names that you use. What matters most is that the good times keep on rollin'!
